My Favorite Blanket

What if someone told you there really is that "one" person out there just for you; the fully reliable, productive, fun-loving, great sense of humor possessing someone who would never abandon you? Ever! It's the stuff of fairy tales and of  little girls' dreams. Hmmmm.....warm feelings of contentment and a recurring daydream, followed by a long sigh just happened, didn't it?

We are all born with needs, physical sustenance first and foremost. But shortly after the milk comes the craving for security. When a new mother must lie her baby down, she swaddles him tightly to mock the sensation of hugging. Infant swings mimic the rocking motion of a coddling mom. In utero sounds are played to remind the baby of the safety of the womb. As the child grows, he begins to find contentment in other things. Of course mom is still vital, but familiar toys, movies and books create a secure environment. A favorite blanket or special stuffed bear provide enough security to separate from mom, at least overnight we pray.

The adolescent and teen begin to seek out other forms of insurance, which most times end up being detrimental. Drugs, alcohol and unhealthy relationships are just a few samples from the a la carte menu of "what will satisfy me today?" Oftentimes, these choices follow us into adulthood and began to set us up for a lifetime of disappointment. Our expectations of that person, spouse, friend, substance or even child regress to that fairy tale message of happily ever after. Our rose colored glasses though quickly become clear.

It becomes evident that NO ONE, not one person, and NOTHING, not one thing, has the ability to give us 100% security with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. No, not one person does, but one God does. All of the security we crave and seek after in a day or in a lifetime is found in our heavenly father. He is our untapped resource of void validating, soul saving, heart healing goodness.

Human relationships are most healthy when there is a parallel walk towards Almighty God. As parents we must hold our children's hands and lead them to the Light that is Jesus. We must continually point them to the source of their sustenance, their all in all. As spouses and friends we must continually forge on ignoring what the world says will satisfy us. We must not falter or expect our security to come from "our people." It never will. It is only the promise of God that sees us through and makes our journey bearable. As we continually seek Him and lay our burdens upon Him, we will enjoy traveling through trials, into sanctification, ultimately plunging into the heavenly kingdom where we will not only feel security, but elation and awe!

Take your refuge in Him. He will never disappoint. God is the biggest, warmest, fuzziest security blanket ever. I joyously wrap myself in his shelter , protected and safe in His love. I invite you to do the same.

Psalm 46:1-7
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. "Selah" 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. "Selah"
