As we lit the 3rd candle on the Advent wreath this morning, we talked about Joy. Each of my 3 littles lit a candle and we reviewed the Hope and Love that we have in Jesus. And then, as we lit the pink candle, I reminded them of the Joy that we experience with Him as Lord of our lives. I explained the difference between happiness and joy by describing life as a roller coaster. The ups and downs of happy and sad versus the even keel, or level and smooth sailing that is joy. The joy of the Lord is the same in good and bad times, in happiness and in mourning. Joy is constant. Happiness comes and goes, is temporary and intense. Joy is even present in suffering. Happiness results in times of no conflict and no struggle and is dependent on circumstances. Joy is a result of dependence on almighty God.
Joy is knowing we are loved by God, knowing that He has our best interest in all He does in our lives, and that even in our darkest days, He is with us. It is more than a feeling. It is a condition; a benefit of accepting Jesus Christ
It was a good lesson for me to hear today, as I am tempted most when happiness is absent. Joy, though and the hope of heaven keep my focus on the prize. The joy of the Lord is my strength, it really is! When I remember that happiness is fleeting and that joy is eternal, I am content.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4
In the word of God, I find Joy. In the midst of conflict, joy prevails. And in my heart, joy resides.

May the Joy that is only found in the saving blood of Jesus Christ be yours today and always.

"Joy to the World, the Lord is come. Let earth receive her King! Let every heart prepare Him room!"
