![]() Let me begin by saying I hate TV. If it was not for my husband and his mother needing to watch sports we wouldn’t have it! We went for months that way. Netflix offered enough cartoon entertainment for the kids and movie time for me, without the daily “news” of transgender celebrities, sexual contact between teachers and students, and corrupt politics. I actually make the kids leave the room when my mother in law watches the evening news. It is totally PG-13! And don’t even get me started on the Viagra commercials at EVERY commercial break during the Pirates games! What the heck is going on in this world when I cannot take the chance of channel surfing even local morning TV or trust the local network broadcasting sports with my kids in the room?! It just keeps getting worse as the media pushes the envelope further and further. What’s a mom to do?! I am in prayer about making a plan for summer that keeps them from disturbing images, as our household is of varying ages and levels of tolerance. I have always used the parental blocks and have monitored their viewing, but as they get a little older, it is definitely requiring more diligence on my part. I know that God wants my children to be fed with truth and wholesomeness, so the TV and electronics will be limited and monitored this summer. God’s word says in Psalm 101:3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. I think Ephesians 5:6-15 sums it up…6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. I struggle myself with filtering what I watch and read. It is no easy task. But as I grow in my love and devotion to Jesus, I am prompted to turn from things that are not beneficial and seek more appropriate content in my reading and my viewing. Please pray for me and for all of parents as summer begins and we try to keep our kids learning and growing. I miss the Brady Bunch! Prayer: Father God, help us as parents to be fearless and deliberate as we filter the media for our children that they may grow in love and commitment to you and your kingdom. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen ![]() I am currently reading this and highly recommend it!
